About

info 001. Biography

Jack Garceau is a painter and draftsman based in New York. Born in Brooklyn to an Italian family, his father gave him his first brush and, more importantly, his first love of making art — a foundation his stepfather, a master painter, would later formalize. Literature, sculpture, music, and a permission to experiment were in the house from the beginning; the painting practice grew out of that.

His current paintings take sculpture as their subject. The figures are painted close, cropped, often slightly blurred, such that his posture, weight, and body language do most of the work. Classical reference is present, but it arrives the way memory does: partial, unfixed, recognizable without being fully placed. Memories that have no single entry point and no obvious exit.

Form is the through-line. Across painting, drawing, photography, and digital work for film and advertising, Garceau is occupied with what form expresses, and with how its framing — close, cropped, softened — shapes that expression. He studied physics in college and works as a financial software engineer.
